Spring Classes Will Be Online

Students: While you should not come to campus, you can still complete your classes and receive the grades and credits you earned.

Winter Excused Withdrawals

If you are unable to complete a course in winter quarter for reasons related to the coronavirus or the shift to remote learning, you can still drop and receive an excused withdrawal. You must submit your request by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27.

  • You will be allowed to repeat the course; it will not be counted against the limits on repeating courses.
  • You will need to check with the Financial Aid Office regarding whether this affects your eligibility status for aid.

If you need an excused withdrawal for a particular course, please email Nazy Galoyan, dean of Enrollment Services, at galoyannazy@deanza.edu, before 5 p.m. on Friday, March 27. Be sure to provide your eight-digit CWID and please use the email account that you have listed on your student records, so we can verify your information.

Updates on Spring Registration and Books

With spring classes now beginning the week of April 13, we've adjusted some other important deadlines for things like adding or dropping classes. You'll find the new dates listed in the academic calendar.

  • You can still register on MyPortal through Sunday, April 12. After that, you will need to email the instructor to get an add code.
  • Class listings and times will be updated as soon as possible to replace room locations with “online.” Any regular online class meeting times – if any – will also be added to the class listing footnotes. Continue to check the footnotes for any class you are registered for, or are considering.
  • Don't worry if you still see some of the old dates in our registration system – for example, some classes may still be listed as starting April 6, because we may not be able to adjust all the dates in the system.
  • There will be no drop for nonpayment for spring quarter.
  • You can use the Bookstore's online site to order books and materials – including computers and calculators – for spring quarter. Our Bookstore staff will begin shipping orders as soon as possible, while we take every precaution to help protect their health.
  • When you order online, you can use the dropdown menu for payment methods to select "Financial Aid" if you have an award – such as De Anza College Promise or EOPS – that provides funds for books and materials.

  • Online Learning

    Resources for Online Learning

    Your instructor will let you know about specific arrangements for each class. If you have questions, please contact your instructor.

    • Online Class Tools: Visit the Online Education Center's Student Resource Hub for tips, guides and answers to your questions about using Canvas, Zoom and other remote learning tools that your classes may be adopting.
    • Tutoring and Workshops: The Student Success Center (SSC) is offering peer tutoring and workshops through Zoom videoconferencing. You can also get free online tutoring through Smarthinking and NetTutor. Check the SSC's Services Update webpage for more details.
    • Chat With a Librarian! If you have questions or need reference help, the Library has a new online chat function available Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Visit the Library website and look for the red button.
    • Need a Computer?  Students can get discounts on computers, software and other tech products through the CollegeBuys online store.
    • Need a Computer and Can't Afford One? We'll try to help. To be considered for one of the following options, send an email request to Lisa Mandy, director of Financial Aid and Scholarships, at mandylisa@deanza.edu. Be sure to include your name and CWID.
      • A limited number of computers are available from the college for short-term loan
      • If you're in the De Anza College Promise program, you can use your Bookstore voucher to purchase a device. The Financial Aid office can increase the amount of your voucher up to $500 to help cover the purchase cost. 
      • If you aren’t in the De Anza College Promise program, the Financial Aid office can check to see if you’re eligible for other aid or an emergency cash grant to help cover the cost of purchasing a device from the Bookstore.
    • Free Internet:
      • Home Internet: Comcast is offering free internet service for the next two months through its Internet Essentials program for low-income households. Generally, you can qualify if you are receiving SNAP, SSI, WIC or other forms of income assistance. Visit internetessentials.com/covid19 for more information.
      • Wi-Fi Hotspots: Comcast also says it has made its network of Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots free for all users. Other wireless and internet companies have agreed to waive data limits or late fees. Check with your provider to confirm details. 
         
         
  • Support and Services

    Student Support and Health Services

    • Student Services: Many campus offices – including Disability Support Services, EOPS and Veteran Services – are available to assist you by email, Zoom video and other formats. Please see the websites for individual programs or check this list of remote services for contact information.
    • Food Resources: The mobile food pantry from West Valley Community Services is continuing to visit Parking Lot C from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month, while the De Anza Food Pantry is temporarily closed. You’ll find a list of other local food programs on our Resources for Basic Needs webpage.
    • Unemployment and Financial Assistance
      • Santa Clara County is offering emergency financial assistance for low-income residents to help pay for rent or other basic needs, if they have lost income because of the coronavirus situation. Apply online through Sacred Heart Community Services or call 408.780.9134.
      • Donated funds are available for limited cash grants to assist De Anza students who are struggling with an urgent expense. Learn more about these emergency funds at deanza.edu/resources
      • California's state employment agency has compiled helpful FAQs about state benefits for unemployment, disability and family leave for people affected by the coronavirus.

      • PG&E has announced it won't disconnect customers for nonpayment. It's also offering flexible payment plans and other programs for customers affected by the coronavirus.
      • Health Insurance: Find answers to your questions about Medi-Cal, Covered California and other insurance coverage for coronavirus screening or health care. 
    • Psychological Services: Free counseling is available by phone or online. To schedule an appointment with one of De Anza’s Psychological Services counselors, call 408.864.8868 or email dapsychservice@deanza.edu. You’ll need to provide your eight-digit student identification number, also known as a campuswide ID or CWID.
    • Health Services: While the campus clinic is closed, you can get answers to routine, non-emergency health questions by emailing dahealthclerk@deanza.edu. Please provide your name, CWID and email address. We'll respond within 24 hours. You can also visit Wellness Central, an online resource for students.

Faculty Members: The Online Education Center has assembled resources to support you in teaching remotely. Visit the center's new Faculty Resource Hub to learn more about webinars, online labs and instructional guides for using Zoom, Canvas and other tools.

  • Need Some Help? You can reach the Online Education Center team by emailing onlineeducation@deanza.edu 
  • The Online Education Center is also surveying faculty members who have been teaching face-to-face or hybrid courses, in order to learn whether they prefer to use Canvas or other alternative formats, and what resources they need. You can submit your survey responses online. The center will use the results to provide relevant support.

The college has been planning for this possibility for several weeks, and we will continue to work out the details necessary to make things go as smoothly as possible.

  • Events and Shows: The college has canceled or postponed all on-campus events for the foreseeable future. This includes Planetarium shows and field trips.
  • Athletics: The California Community College Athletic Association - the governing body for Athletics at De Anza and other community colleges - has canceled competition and practices (outside of regularly scheduled classes) for all spring sports, and all nontraditional sports seasons.

Health Resources

The following steps are recommended as most effective to avoid spreading respiratory illnesses. Health experts do not recommend wearing a face mask unless you are sick or caring for someone who is sick.
